S-STEM Scholarship Information and Mixer at ASU West Valley

  The TraIN scholarship project funds academically talented, low-income transfer students who are pursuing a STEM degree at ASU’s New College located at the ASU West Valley campus (list of New College degrees here). The scholarship is worth $10,000/year!  Our application deadline is approaching on March 1st, and so we want to open our doors to welcome prospective students (and any faculty or staff members at your institution who work with these students!!).

S-STEM Funded Master's Degree Opportunity

In 2021, a team in the Penn State College of Engineering was awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM) funding (#2130169) to support talented low-income students to obtain a two-year, thesis-based master of science (M.S.) degree in engineering or computer science. The program is known locally as the Advancing Master’s Program (AMP). Please share the attached information sheet with your undergraduate S-STEM scholars in engineering or computer science (or majors that feed into engineering such as physics or math). Some of the M.S. programs have deadlines as early as December 1. Phoenix College Sports Analytics Undergraduate Research Opportunity!

 Phoenix College Sports Analytics Undergraduate Research

 Hours per week:  4

Research End Date:  End of Spring Semester

Paid: YES     Amount: $1,000!!!

September 4th, 2023 for Full consideration, afterwards until the 3 positions are filled.

Research Summary: 

This research focuses on Sports Analytics and offers a chance for the participants to hone their skills in the Scientific process with the possibility of scholarly publication (4 former students published an article for a similar endeavor in the past). The research goal is to collect USL Championship data and create a model to predict match outcomes. The USL is the professional soccer league where our local team (Phoenix Rising) plays. Dr. Posta will lead weekly meetings (about one hour long) to mentor you. He will also discuss the data and computational requirements needed to perform the analysis. Students do not need previous experience in computing or any sports knowledge. At the end of the experience, students will prepare a report and poster based on their results. There is also opportunity to present at virtual or local conferences (not a requirement, just an opportunity!). No previous experience necessary, just curiosity about the scientific method. Interest in the soccer a plus!

Pending funding there will be the chance to renew the Internship for Spring 2024.

Requirements: 

Students must be able to meet with their research faculty at a scheduled time

Students must complete and submit a final report

Student can only be part of this endeavor if they fulfill the National Science Foundation definition of underrepresented minority student:

The NSF defines an underrepresented student as a member of a group traditionally underrepresented in mathematics, science, and engineering, such as S. Hispanics, African American, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders/Alaska Natives.The NSF does not consider Asian-Americans or Anglo women or men to be underrepresented as part of its funding guidelines for this program. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Students must be enrolled in at least 3 credits for Fall 2023

Must have completed Calculus 1 (MAT220 or MAT213) with a grade of C or better. Student who are currently enrolled in Calculus 1 can apply and will be considered.

Desired Qualifications: 

Ability to work with data such as use of spreadsheets and statistics.

1) Have fun learning about nanotechnology and get hands-on laboratory experience and find out what it is like working as a scientist and lab technician.

2) Learn how to use real-world, advanced instrumentation such as:  a real Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to “see” very small objects.  Also learn how to use a real energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDXS) to determine the elemental makeup of objects.

4) Learn how to use a real Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) to study the 3-dimensional topography and properties surfaces, at a magnification of up to 1,000,000X.

5) Learn how to perform X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques.

6) Go on field trips to Arizona State University to visit their facilities and use their suite of analytical instrumentation.

7) Get involved with working in the areas of micro- and nanotechnology, possibly leading to future internship experiences. 

8) Work on an independent project in micro- and nanotechnology.

Dr. Sian Proctor is a geoscientist, explorer, space artist, and astronaut. She was the mission pilot for the SpaceX Inspiration4 all-civilian orbital mission. She is the first African American woman to pilot a spacecraft, the first African American commercial astronaut, and the first African American to paint in space. She is also one of The Explorer’s Club 50: Fifty People Changing the World. Her motto is called Space2inspire where she encourages people to use their unique, one-of-a-kind strengths, and passion to inspire those within their reach and beyond. She believes that we need to actively strive for a J.E.D.I. space: a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space as we advance human spaceflight.She uses her afro-futurism space art to encourage conversations about women of color in the space industry. She believes that when we solve for space, we also solve issues on Earth and she promotes the adoption of space technology to issues such as food waste and climate change.

Dr. Proctor spent over 20 years as a professor teaching geology, sustainability, and planetary science at South Mountain Community College, in Phoenix, Arizona. She is currently the director of the Global Futures Institute for the Maricopa Community College District. Dr. Proctor is an inspirational speaker and I hope you can all join us.

Spring Break STEM Service Learning @Rio Salado Audubon (3/16)

Join Phoenix College STEM students on March 16th for a day of Service Learning at the Rio Salado Audubon Center! The Rio Salado Audubon Center is a nature center in the heart of Phoenix's Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area—a 600-acre park space in the historic Salt River corridor.

Meet friends, gain skills, give back to the community! 

We'll be helping to widen the nature trails near the Nature Center for wheelchair access and cleaning up litter. Widening trails involves moving river rock along the side of the path and trimming or removing vegetation. They will provide tools and work gloves.

A unique, funded, and hands-on opportunity for students underrepresented in biodiversity science to participate in natural history collections research

The Biocollections Scholars Program will help you:

• •Take the next step in building connections to nature
• •Interact with diverse scientists that research the Earth’s biodiversity
• •Gain technical skills needed for careers that use biodiversity science
• •Work with a team on a project that will benefit future scientific research

The 2021 JEDI Biocollections Summer Scholars Program participants head out collecting.

Scholars program: 

Participants will earn a stipend of $2,200 over six weeks (May 31 - July 8, 2022) to work with mentors and peers on a collaborative biodiversity research and outreach project using the start-to-finish approach routinely taken by natural history collections scientists. This process will include:

• Conducting field surveys of local plants, insects, and vertebrates
• Preparing and preserving your own specimens in the ASU Natural History Collections
• Publishing your specimen and observation data online, including images
• Creating and linking your own scientific profiles to published data
• Learning and using basic programming and data management skills
• Leading a collaborative project aimed at biodiversity science outreach

Students will contribute to open biodiversity science, providing a valuable resource for future scientists and learn how to formulate specimen-driven research questions. In addition, scholars will explore potential career paths involving botany, entomology, zoology, and biodiversity informatics and network with scientists of diverse backgrounds.

 Please meet ASU West's Peer Mentor, Kassandra Barrera Garcia!

Hello everyone! I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I am currently a Senior at Arizona State University West Campus getting a degree in Forensic Science. In 2019, I graduated from Phoenix College with an Associate in Science and Arts. That same year I transferred to Arizona State University to continue my studies. I was a part of the TRAIN program in both schools and researched at Phoenix College for two years. I worked closely with Dr. Robin Cotter, who is a microbiology teacher for the biosciences department. She allowed me to do research on a Biodegradation project that involved different species of pseudomonas.

As I continue my studies at ASU, I am a Student Peer Mentor for the TRAIN scholarship. My job is to help incoming transfer students and support students already enrolled in ASU classes in the New College Program. Aside from being at school, I love to be outdoors and go hiking. I also love to play the piano and hang out with my friends and family. :)

Rutgers Ecology & Evolution Graduate Program Information

 The Rutgers Ecology & Evolution graduate program is hosting an online info session and Q&A for undergraduates who may be interested in graduate school in ecology and evolution but are either unaware of the opportunities or unfamiliar with the process.

The session will be a 90-minute Zoom webinar and will include faculty and grad student panels with opportunities to ask questions. We’ll focus on demystifying the graduate school experience, offer some brief descriptions of the kinds of research one can do, and give some advice on finding and applying to a lab in the field.
