2015 SUMMER TERM INTERNSHIP/FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!

The Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to its 2015 Summer Term internship/fellowship programs. These programs, which offer opportunities for direct engagement in scientific research and technology featuring specialized instrumentation; large-scale, multidisciplinary efforts; and/or scientific user facilities, are available for undergraduate students enrolled at community colleges and/or four-year institutions, and for visiting faculty. Selected students or faculty participate at one of 17 DOE Laboratories/Facilities, receive stipends, and may qualify for travel and housing assistance.

Applications for these competitive programs must be completed and submitted online by 5:00 PM ET on January 9, 2015 (including all required application materials and recommendations). The 2015 Summer Term placements are for 10 weeks duration in a May to August timeframe. 

 

The three programs accepting applications are:

 

·         The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences, under the guidance of laboratory/facility staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.  More information about SULI and access to the online application is at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/suli/. 

 

·         The Community College Internship (CCI) program encourages community college students to enter technical careers relevant to the DOE mission by providing technical training experiences at the DOE Labs.  Students work on technologies or instrumentation projects or major research facilities related to ongoing R&D programs. ·         The Visiting Faculty Program (VFP) seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in the research community in order to expand the workforce vital to the DOE mission areas.  In this program, selected university/college faculty members collaborate with DOE laboratory research staff on a research project of mutual interest. Faculty member participants may invite up to two students (one of which may be a graduate student) to participate in the research project. Applicants establish their collaborations with laboratory research staff in advance of applying and must submit a co-developed research proposal as part of the application. Students apply separately at the invitation of the faculty member. More information about the VFP and access to the online application is at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/vfp/.

The SULI, CCI and VFP programs are sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists. The Department of Energy's Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

SULI Program Overview

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 16 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories.

Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms.

ADOT Paid Student Internships - Environmental/Biology

ADOT has a couple paid intern positions open to work on environmental and biology-related review of projects and activities.  They are looking to fill the positions quickly, so if you could share this with students who might be interested, that would be great!  Interns can usually work up to 40 hours during the summer and 20 hours during the school year.

One position is with the biology team in the Environmental Planning Group - primarily working in the office on review of transportation projects for compliance with the Endangered Species Act and other related laws.  The second position is to work with the District Environmental Coordinator in the Phoenix Maintenance District, which is the field side of environmental, including biology, dust control, and all kinds of

Undergraduate Research Week

Undergraduate Research Week 2014 starts today and runs through the end of the week.  In commemoration of this special time, CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research) is planning a number of activities, including online conversations, a book sale, opportunities for institutional recognition, and student development opportunities. In addition, a website detailing the celebrations taking place at various venues across the U.S. has been developed.

New this year, we encourage you to join us in a hashtag-a-thon throughout the week, by using the Undergraduate Research Week hashtag, #URW2014. Some suggestions for what to post are found below:

Held just before Undergraduate Research Week, the University of Kentucky hosted NCUR 2014, April 3-5. The mission of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is to promote undergraduate research scholarship and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of education.  

Please remind your students about the ongoing opportunity for them to use CUR's Registry of Undergraduate Researchers to assist them in their pursuit of a graduate degree.  The purpose of the Registry of Undergraduate Researchers is to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates with research experience and a desire to pursue an advanced degree, and graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. Currently, the Registry is open to students and graduate schools/employers in nearly all fields.  We strongly encourage students attending NCUR 2014 at University of Kentucky to use the Registry service in association with visiting graduate program recruiters present at the conference.
