Deadline Extended: All-AZ Academic Team Scholarship

Time is running out to apply for the All-USA Academic Team. The deadline has been extended until midnight on November 27, 2012.

The collaboration of USA TODAY, Follett Higher Education Group, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation, AACC and Phi Theta Kappa leads to students being featured in an April issue of USA TODAY and awarded nearly $350,000 in scholarships.

All students may log in to the application by going to https://my.ptk.org/edge/login/index.php. Phi Theta Kappa members may log in using their Phi Theta Kappa username and password. If they have forgotten their log in, follow the steps on the log in page for "PTK Member Password Recovery." Non-members may access the application by selecting the link that says "Create Non-Member Account" on the log in page. Non-members should follow the instructions to create an account and view the application.

Once the student has logged in, he or she should select the link in the center of the page that says “2012 Fall Common Scholarship." They should follow the instructions and enter the enrollment key (MDMyNzUy4227) when instructed. The application is a Common Application and Phi Theta Kappa members may apply for separate Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite and/or Hites Transfer Scholarships at the same time as the All-USA Community College Academic Team.

Again, the deadline to apply is midnight on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.

For more information, students may contact Eileen Archibald at 5-7870, Michelle Klinger at 5-7842 or Brenda Maynard at 5-7881.

Sustainable Personal Transportation: The Re-electrification of the Automobile
Dr. Michael A. Tamor, Ford Motor Company
Executive Technical Leader for Hybrid Vehicle and Fuel Cell Research

Monday, November 19, 2012
 6pm reception,
FREE public lecture 6:30 to 7:30 pm
 SkySong, Convergence Room 150
  free parking

The re-electrification of the motor vehicle is progressing rapidly
Electrified vehicles span the range from hybrid-electric (HEV) that do not actually use electricity from the wall - but do deliver improvement in fuel economy, through hybrids that do plug in (PHEV) and run modest distance before using any fuel, to battery electric vehicles (BEV) that run on electricity only.

However, is this enough to make the personal automobile sustainable? Our public dialog often accepts as facts that automobiles are far less efficient than other transportation modes, electric driving will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, customers are ready for the compromises of a BEV, and plug-in vehicles will somehow accelerate the introduction of clean electric generation.

Intended to promote rational discussion rather than particular solutions, this presentation combines first-principles considerations of fuel and energy storage, publicly available energy data, and results of our own vehicle studies to test these assumptions. It is found that an advanced hybrid electric vehicle is a surprisingly efficient transportation device, and with growing availability of renewable fuel it is possible to achieve sustainable personal transportation without a dramatic sacrifice of functionality. It is also suggested that public policy must be carefully designed to assure alignment between the goals of environmental responsibility and energy independence.
