Undergraduate Research Week

Undergraduate Research Week 2014 starts today and runs through the end of the week.  In commemoration of this special time, CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research) is planning a number of activities, including online conversations, a book sale, opportunities for institutional recognition, and student development opportunities. In addition, a website detailing the celebrations taking place at various venues across the U.S. has been developed.

New this year, we encourage you to join us in a hashtag-a-thon throughout the week, by using the Undergraduate Research Week hashtag, #URW2014. Some suggestions for what to post are found below:

  •          The thing I value most about UR is X #URW2014
  •          Thanks to my UR advisor Dr. X for teaching me Y and Z #URW2014
  •          Congratulations to my students X, Y, and Z who presented at ABC conference this year! #URW2014
  •          I presented my research at X conference this year! #URW2014
  •          My research was published in X journal this year! #URW2014
  •          Congratulations to my student, X, who will be attending graduate school at Y institution next year. #URW2014
  •          Thank you to X University/College for giving me an opportunity to do undergraduate research #URW2014

Because many of these might be longer than a standard tweet, we suggest posting to our facebook page. If you're not already a fan, check it out today!

Held just before Undergraduate Research Week, the University of Kentucky hosted NCUR 2014, April 3-5. The mission of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is to promote undergraduate research scholarship and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of education.

Please remind your students about the ongoing opportunity for them to use CUR's Registry of Undergraduate Researchers to assist them in their pursuit of a graduate degree.  The purpose of the Registry of Undergraduate Researchers is to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates with research experience and a desire to pursue an advanced degree, and graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. Currently, the Registry is open to students and graduate schools/employers in nearly all fields.  We strongly encourage students attending NCUR 2014 at University of Kentucky to use the Registry service in association with visiting graduate program recruiters present at the conference. For more information please visit the registry homepage.

Fwd: Research Coach (PC Library)

Spread the word to your students about the PC Library's “Research Coach” service!   Research Coaches are librarians who assist students with common challenges they often face when doing research, such as:

·         Framing a research question

·         Choosing where to look for resources

·         Using resources in the most effective way possible

·         Knowing how to evaluate different sources

·         Citing sources correctly

Students can schedule an appointment online with a Research Coach or stop by the reference desk.  Research shows that students who use academic library resources and interact with librarians are more engaged with college and are less likely to leave before graduating.
